Embarking on a portrait photo shoot is an exciting journey. But you can be filled with lots of questions! To ensure we achieve the best results together, here’s a guide on how you can prepare for your upcoming portrait photo shoot.

Communication is Key:

Before the shoot, let’s have a conversation about your vision, preferences, and expectations. You will out my questionnaire that helps me see what direction were going with our shoot! Share any specific ideas you have in mind, whether it’s the location, style, or mood you want to convey. Clear communication helps me tailor the shoot to your unique personality and style, ensuring the final images truly reflect you.

Grooming and Hair:

If you’re up for it, schedule haircuts and grooming sessions a week or two before the shoot to ensure a fresh look.

For makeup it can go a variety of ways. If you want to look natural go with something natural and timeless that complements your features. Usually a dewy foundation/tinted moisturizer is great for something on the skin but that doesn’t look overdone! It can be so fun to try new things for makeup but also try it out before the session. Sometimes excessive use of trendy or dramatic makeup, might overshadow your genuine expressions. A lot of the makeup prep comes down to outfits too! So be sure what youre doing is going to mesh well with that!

Rest and Sleep

Life can be crazy busy, but if possible, get a good amount of sleep before your session!

Props and Personal Touches:

Bring items that hold sentimental value or reflect your interests and hobbies.Depending on the type of shoot you’re having could impact these decisions. If were doing something for branding we can do a deep dive on ideas and what will stand out for you and your job/business! If the shoot is for something else personal touches can add depth to your portraits and tell a more comprehensive story. Whether it’s a favorite book, musical instrument, or a cherished accessory, incorporating these elements can make your portraits uniquely yours.Talk more with me about this if you wanna bring some things along.

Food and Snacks

It’s always a great idea to have something in your tummy before the session and have some quick snacks an drinks during the session! If were on the go outside pack something in a bag to grab quick! If were in the studio I have some snack and drinks there!

Relax and Enjoy the Experience:

Nervousness is completely natural before a photo shoot, but remember, this is a collaborative effort. Relax, be yourself, and enjoy the experience. Candid moments often make the most memorable photographs, so don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through.

Wardrobe Choices:

Your clothing choices play a significant role in the overall look of your portraits. Opt for outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Consider a mix of solid colors or subtle patterns, as they tend to photograph well. Avoid overly busy patterns, as they can distract from the main focus—you. Don’t forget to bring a variety of options, including layers and accessories, to add visual interest and versatility to your session.

Styling is unique to each person and shoot. But don’t be afraid to step outside the box! Ill include a few pinterest boards on outfit ideas. But please feel free to dig around and get some fun ideas you didn’t think about incorporating.

If you have lots of wrinkles in your outfit try to steam them out before coming in. You can also help reduce wrinkles by hanging the clothes in the car for yout drive to the shoot.

It could be a great idea to bring a few pairs of shoes. If were outside and walking alot something comfy to slip on could be great! If were indoors it can give ya a few options with your photos!

Think about the location we wil be shooting. Does the wardrobe flow with the ideas?

Prepping for your Senior Session

Are you a high school senior, getting your photos taken? Well this is going to be one of the most exciting events of your senior year. Senior portraits are an amazing way to capture memories of this special time in your life, and they are also an opportunity to show off your style and personality. To make sure that your senior photos turn out authentic, it’s essential to prep ahead of time. Here are some tips for prepping for your Senior Session.

For those who like spark notes haha:

-Choose the perfect outfit that reflects your style and personality

–Schedule appointments with professional stylists for hair and makeup (If thats your vibe)

–Consider bringing props and accessories that reflect your hobbies or interests

–Practice posing beforehand by looking up different poses online and trying them out

-Rest up before the session

–Have fun and relax during the shoot to ensure the best photos

Find the best location

Location ideas are endless. One of the most important things for prepping for your Senior Session is finding a location. Yes, you can go anywhere but, your location should be authentic and uniquely you. City scapes, urban/town settings can give you lots of great views, textures, and grit. Even with lots of steel, brick, and architecture you can usually find lots of great greenery, water, and artwork to really make the session versatile. Also parks, waterways, rivers, etc.. the great outdoors will always be a staple in senior sessions. Finding a location that speaks to you is key! Studio sessions can be as simple or creative as we can get! And anything like favorite coffee shops, hobbies, Sports themed, music themed, etc… is great! I can help you narrow down ideas from my shoot questionnaire if you haven’t decided yet.

Choose the perfect outfit

Picking the right outfit is crucial for your senior photo shoot. Choose clothes that reflect your style and personality, but make sure they are also appropriate for the occasion and season . Pinterest link for guys. Pinterest link for gals. Non Binary & Gender Fluid link .

-Experiment with textures and colors that complement your location

-Brung layers for versitle looks ( if the season permits it weather wise)

-Bring a casual and dressy outfit

-Bring a few pairs of shoes especially if were walking a lot between locations

Schedule hair and makeup appointments

Hair and makeup can be a great treat for yourself. Im all about self love and by no mean believe anyone needs it. But if its something you know you will enjoy I say go for it! Book appointments with professional stylists to ensure your look enhances your natural beauty and complements your outfit. If you’re doing your hair and makeup yourself, practice before the shoot to perfect your look.

Consider bringing props and accessories

Adding props and accessories to your photos can make them more personal and unique. Choose items that reflect your hobbies, interests, or future aspirations. Some popular props for senior photos include musical instruments, sports equipment, books, and flowers.

Practice posing before the shoot

Posing isn’t something we always do. I will help coach you through posing with prompts and direction. But you can totally go on IG, Tim Tok, Pinterest, google, etc and look up ideas! … It could help to try different poses you find online and try them in front of a mirror. If that’s too cringe for ya, don’t worry, I got you with the prompts haha.

Have fun and relax during the shoot

Senior photos are supposed to be fun! Try not to stress too much and focus on enjoying the experience. If you’re feeling nervous, take a deep breath and remind yourself that the photographer is there to help you look your best.

Rest up

Prior to your session it’s important to be rested. There can be a lot going on in your life like events, homework, sports, etc… But you will want to be harp and rested up before your session. And stay hydrated. Water is your friend.

In conclusion, prepping for your high school senior photo shoot is essential to ensure that you have photos that you’ll cherish for years to come. I hope this helped you with ideas for prepping for your Senior Session!

What the process looks like from booking to receiving your wedding images

Im gonna get straight and to the point about what the process will be like! I am always so thankful for any couple who hires me to document their day. There are so many amazing photographers out there and I am always so excited to work with new couples and capture their day uniquely for them!

Here is a timeline to go over the wedding photography process wit CTG Photography. If you are already booked with us or you are thinking about booking you can see below and in the video what steps you can look forward to!

1.Booking

After booking and signing the contract you can pay your retainer. Then you will get a private client portal with all your information and contracts. I tell clients to make a specific email folder for wedding photography to keep all of the communications in one place!

After booking you will send in your retainers and you can pick the payment method within the booking process.

2.Wedding day timeline help ( 1 month after booking)

A few weeks after booking I will send out an email that has a link to a blog post and questionnaire for you to start thinking about your wedding day timeline. The blog post helps you plan out the day and buffer enough time for the different photography segments of the day!

3.Engagement scheduling (6-12 months prior to wedding)

If you have an engagement session in your package you generally want to book your session 6-12 months before your wedding. This is not set in stone and can be done anytime before the wedding. But this time frame is great if you want to send out save the dates.

Weekend shoots are not always a guarantee since I work many weekends for weddings. You will want to schedule your engagement session date 4-8 weeks before you want your images back.

4.Help videos and blog posts (1 month after booking to 1 month before wedding)

During the time I send these out any questions you have feel free to reach out to me!

5.Wedding questionnaire (4 months prior to the wedding)

Around 4 months prior to your wedding I will send out a wedding questioner that asks all the vital information I need for your wedding day. You have 3 months to fill it out! I like to send it early so you have time to work on it!

6.Check in ( 2 months prior to the wedding)

Generally around 2 months out from the wedding I will check in with you to see how the questionnaire is going and if you need any help or clarification for anything!

7. Phone call meeting (1 month prior to wedding)

8. Check in email (1 week prior to the wedding)

One week prior to the wedding I do a last check in through email and if any last minute changes are to be made we can talk about that then!

9.Gets room numbers (night prior to wedding)

If you are staying at a hotel and I am doing getting ready images I will contact you the night before to get the room number you will be in.

Within a few weeks after the wedding if you signed a model release I will share a sneak peek of your wedding images on different social media outlets!

12.Delivery of images (Within 12 weeks after wedding)

Pintrest- Let me tell your story, not someone else’s

Oh no, talking about Pinterest! I have such a love hate relationship with it! As a consumer and semi stereotypical female… I love Pintrest. My whole house was influenced by the hipster pins of Pintrest haha! Don’t believe me? Look right here at my house haha! Now don’t get me wrong about Pintrest. It is amazing for its purpose, to get ideas. My problem with Pinterest is the unrealistic portrayal of what “every” photo of your wedding or portrait session should look like. The pins where a person can obsess over recreating the exact photo with the light coming through at the perfect time of the day. The photos you “generally” see on Pintrest are the best of the best from the wedding day. And it can start to really make you feel like your day isn’t special enough unless you get the exact Pintrest worthy photos! AND THAT’S NOT TURE!!! Your photographer will beautifully capture your day uniquely and there is no need to recreate every Pintrest photo you see!

I bet you’re thinking “but wait, you’re a professional photographer. You should be able to do all of this.” Yes I can likely recreate many images on Pinterest, but I don’t want to. You came to me as a creative person to capture your day. I wan’t you to have faith in my creative decisions. Unless we are in California on a cliff at sunset on a perfect late summer day… you’re not getting a photo like that in downtown Pittsburgh. You can pull ideas and poses from Pinterest! I really love it for that vibe of inspiration. But please do not expect any photographer to completely copy a whole board of your ideas for wedding pictures. Again we are all usually ok with you showing us ideas of feels you’re going for. But to sit back and ask us to copy everything is disrespectful to the creative ideas you paid us to do.

You can throw 10 photographers into a location from all over the world. And we are all going to photograph the subject completely different. We will look at lighting different from one another. We are going to look at backgrounds and textures different from one another. We are even going to pose and create different interactions that are vastly going to differ from one another.

So what I’m saying here is that Pinterest isn’t evil. It should be a tool to gather ideas, but to not completely copy. You picked you’re photographer for a reason. Let them creatively tell your story not someone else’s!

Some of the most important photos of the whole day!

-The ones you really want to pass down to family.

-Whats going to go on the wall at grandmas house.

-What you and your family will really look back on.

Things that can make Family photos run late/feel uncomfortable

• Family dynamics/drama

• People leaving when they still have photos to take

• Multiple people in the crowd that want other photos

• Not enough time

TIPS for flowing family formal photos

1.Review my questionnaire I send 4 months prior to the wedding.

2.Write out your own list to put in the questionnaire.

3.Ask important family members if there are any variations they want PRIOR TO THE WEDDING.

Mom and her God daughter, all of your uncles, or all of the cousins together, etc…

These are important variations and should be noted if wanted. Just be sure to buffer enough time in for these after the ceremony or you can have your photographer take these during the reception. But you will need to have a family member or bridal party member grab the subjects in the photo for your photographer. It can get harder the later in the evening to get family together. Often drinks are flowing and attention spans are not there like they will be right after the ceremony. If huge groupings are SUPER IMPORTANT you should get them done with right after the ceremony.

4.If you have a rehearsal dinner remind your family the night before to walk back to the ceremony right after they walk down the aisle for photos.

5.Have a family member/bridal party member hand out small pieces of paper to people who need to stay after the ceremony for photos. The paper will say something like “Please do not leave or talk to other wedding guests until after the family photos are done. Please stay up front near the ceremony space so we can get photos done in a timely manner.”

6.Most family formals can take up to 30 minutes to take. Please talk with your photographer to see the amount of time they think it will take for your specific family!

7.Having a day of coordinator or a wedding planner helps relieve the stress of family photos as well! They can help get people ready for their turn and gather family members!
