Planning a micro wedding or an elopement is all about simplicity and intimacy. Unlike traditional full-day weddings that require extensive timelines, small wedding packages ranging from 3 to 5 hours of coverage need a different approach. If you’re wondering how to create the perfect timeline for your short and sweet wedding day, this guide is for you!

Why Full-Day Wedding Timelines Don’t Apply

Most wedding planning guides focus on 8- to 10-hour wedding days, including everything from getting ready to the grand exit. However, micro weddings and elopements often prioritize only the most meaningful moments—whether it’s the ceremony, a short reception, or a stunning portrait session at a scenic location. Instead of trying to cram a full-day timeline into a few hours, it’s important to be strategic about what’s captured.

How to Create a Timeline for a Micro Wedding or Elopement

When planning a shorter wedding coverage, consider the following:

• Prioritize Key Moments: Every wedding day is unique, and micro weddings require couples to choose what matters most. Whether it’s the intimate getting-ready moments, an emotional first look, the heartfelt ceremony, or a small reception with close family and friends, deciding what deserves priority ensures that the photographer captures the most meaningful parts of your day.
• Keep Travel Time in Mind: If your wedding involves multiple locations, such as getting ready in one place, the ceremony at another, and portraits somewhere else, it’s essential to factor in travel time. Even short distances can cause delays, especially in urban areas with traffic or if additional setup time is needed at each location. Planning accordingly prevents unnecessary stress and allows for a smoother experience.
• Communicate with Vendors: Coordination with your officiant, planner, florist, and other vendors is key to keeping everything on schedule. Ensuring that everyone involved is aware of your timeline can help avoid last-minute surprises. For example, if your florist knows when the bouquet needs to be ready, or your officiant understands the ceremony timing, it keeps everything running seamlessly.
• Schedule Buffer Time: Weddings don’t always go exactly as planned, and that’s okay! A little buffer time between events allows for unexpected delays, whether it’s fixing a wardrobe issue, adjusting to unforeseen weather, or simply enjoying spontaneous moments. Adding extra time into your schedule helps keep things relaxed and enjoyable rather than rushed and stressful.

By choosing an hourly package, you can still capture all the meaningful moments without the stress of an all-day event. I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Ally and Nikos’ spring Heinz Chapel wedding recently,  it was a day filled with love, laughter, and some stunning backdrops.

Our day began at the gorgeous Oaklander Hotel in Oakland. This place is the epitome of chic elegance. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere that’s both modern and cozy. The whole place boasts sleek, contemporary decor with touches of vintage charm—perfect for those getting ready shots. Ally and her bridesmaids looked absolutely radiant against the backdrop of the hotel’s stylish interiors.

Next, we headed over to the Cathedral of Learning for some portraits and their first look. This spot is one of my favorites in Oakland, and it’s easy to see why. The towering architecture and sprawling green spaces create a unique Pittsburgh vibe. Ally and Nikos snuggled up to their first look near the Cathedral and then had family photos in the  grassy park area. The weather was perfect, a tad windy. But this day  felt gorgeous out!

Then it was time for the ceremony at the iconic Heinz Chapel. This place never ceases to amaze me with its stunning stained glass windows and intricate details. The ceremony was heartfelt and beautiful, with Ally and Nikos surrounded by their closest family and friends. The chapel’s timeless beauty provided a perfect setting for such a significant moment.

After the ceremony, we made our way to the reception near the rainforest section of Phipps Conservatory. Talk about a unique venue! The lush greenery and exotic plants made it feel like we were in a tropical paradise. Ally and Nikos had chosen a beautiful blue color scheme for the decor, which complemented the vibrant surroundings perfectly. The reception area was adorned with elegant touches, delicate floral arrangements, and sparkling fairy lights. It was a sight to behold!

The evening was filled with heartfelt speeches, delicious food, and lots of dancing. Thank you, Ally and Nikos, for letting me be a part of your special day. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness and love! I hope everyone else enjoyed this spring Heinz Chapel wedding too!

Sam and Roger’s wedding at the Kinsey Event Center in Oakdale, PA, was an celebration of love, laughter, and pure magic. With a unique twist on the traditional wedding, their special day was all about throwing convention to the wind and embracing their love for each other. From the dazzling Hotel Monaco to the eclectic Kinsey Event Warehouse, this wedding day was filled with personalized touches.

Getting Ready at Hotel Monaco:

Sam and Roger’s wedding adventure started at the luxurious Hotel Monaco in downtown Pittsburgh. Nestled in Downtown Pgh , this chic hotel provided the perfect backdrop for the couple’s pre-wedding preparations. This boutique hotel has so many fun spots for photos and we ate it up! They had their first look on the  breathtaking rooftop. With the cityscape Sam and Roger got to set eyes on one another in their wedding attire.  The couple radiated happiness as they danced, laughed, and exchanged kisses with the city behind them.

Exploring Downtown Pittsburgh:

After capturing the magic on the rooftop and in Hotel Monaco, we took to the streets of downtown Pittsburgh for some couples and bridal party portraits. Im all about a mix of traditional and unique shots that can be hung in homes. With fusion of their style and my camera we got some fun stuff!

Eclectic Kinsey Event Center:

The Kinsey Event Center in Oakdale, PA, proved to be the perfect canvas for Sam and Roger’s vision. With its unique blend of architectural styles, this venue oozed character and Industrial Charm. The rustic elements mingled effortlessly with modern design, creating a one of a kind ambiance that perfectly complemented the couple’s personalities.

One of the most remarkable aspects of Sam and Roger’s wedding was the dazzling disco ball theme. The event center transformed into a sparkle fest with glittering disco balls on all of the tables. The play of lights and reflections created a fun atmosphere. The industrial-chic décor combined with the disco ball theme worked so well!

Sam and Roger’s wedding at The Kinsey Event Warehouse was just amazing to capture. I love when clients mix traditional wedding events with their unique style. Its important and greatly appreciated! It was a great reminder that weddings are a time to celebrate what makes each couple unique.

I feel privileged to have captured the magic of this day. Congrats again Roger and Sam!

I’ve had the privilege of capturing many beautiful moments, but Alyson and Shane’s wedding was a truly special experience. Held on Alyson’s family property where we took their engagement photos, the wedding was a heartfelt celebration of love and heritage. Nestled amidst the charming stables that Alyson’s grandfather had lovingly built, this wedding was a story of love, legacy, and the joy of being surrounded by family and friends in a stunning setting.

The Backyard Wedding

Alyson and Shane’s love story had a unique starting point—their family’s stunning property. This tranquil piece of land was the backdrop for their engagement photos. It was a lovely prelude to their big day and set the tone for the intimate and personal wedding that would follow.

The property boasted lush greenery and the lovingly crafted stables, which would serve as the setting for the wedding ceremony. They provided a perfect blend of rustic charm and family traditions. It was beautiful to see a  wedding that paid homage to her family’s history and create new memories in a place so close to their hearts. The property’s charm extended well beyond the stables. Rolling hills and tree-lined paths with family homes nestled between was so beautiful to see.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of Alyson and Shane’s wedding was the strong sense of community and connection. As the sun set over the property, and the reception kicked off, the reception was held under a tent with stunning string lights and a dancef loor. Tables were adorned with flowers and the cokies and dessert were amazingggg. The toasts were heartfelt, the dance floor was lively, and it was evident that this gathering of family and friends was more than just a wedding; it was a celebration of a love that extended to all who attended.

It was an absolute pleasure to document the love and joy that surrounded Alyson and Shane on their special day.

This wedding was a beautiful reminder that love, when celebrated in a place rich with history and surrounded by cherished loved ones, truly creates a picture perfect day. Alyson and Shane’s wedding was not just an event; it was a heartfelt journey back to their roots, a celebration of their love story, and a beautiful chapter in their family’s history.
