I had the absolute pleasure of photographing Ally and Nikos’ spring Heinz Chapel wedding recently,  it was a day filled with love, laughter, and some stunning backdrops.

Our day began at the gorgeous Oaklander Hotel in Oakland. This place is the epitome of chic elegance. As soon as you walk in, you’re greeted by a warm, inviting atmosphere that’s both modern and cozy. The whole place boasts sleek, contemporary decor with touches of vintage charm—perfect for those getting ready shots. Ally and her bridesmaids looked absolutely radiant against the backdrop of the hotel’s stylish interiors.

Next, we headed over to the Cathedral of Learning for some portraits and their first look. This spot is one of my favorites in Oakland, and it’s easy to see why. The towering architecture and sprawling green spaces create a unique Pittsburgh vibe. Ally and Nikos snuggled up to their first look near the Cathedral and then had family photos in the  grassy park area. The weather was perfect, a tad windy. But this day  felt gorgeous out!

Then it was time for the ceremony at the iconic Heinz Chapel. This place never ceases to amaze me with its stunning stained glass windows and intricate details. The ceremony was heartfelt and beautiful, with Ally and Nikos surrounded by their closest family and friends. The chapel’s timeless beauty provided a perfect setting for such a significant moment.

After the ceremony, we made our way to the reception near the rainforest section of Phipps Conservatory. Talk about a unique venue! The lush greenery and exotic plants made it feel like we were in a tropical paradise. Ally and Nikos had chosen a beautiful blue color scheme for the decor, which complemented the vibrant surroundings perfectly. The reception area was adorned with elegant touches, delicate floral arrangements, and sparkling fairy lights. It was a sight to behold!

The evening was filled with heartfelt speeches, delicious food, and lots of dancing. Thank you, Ally and Nikos, for letting me be a part of your special day. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness and love! I hope everyone else enjoyed this spring Heinz Chapel wedding too!

Embarking on a portrait photo shoot is an exciting journey. But you can be filled with lots of questions! To ensure we achieve the best results together, here’s a guide on how you can prepare for your upcoming portrait photo shoot.

Communication is Key:

Before the shoot, let’s have a conversation about your vision, preferences, and expectations. You will out my questionnaire that helps me see what direction were going with our shoot!  Share any specific ideas you have in mind, whether it’s the location, style, or mood you want to convey. Clear communication helps me tailor the shoot to your unique personality and style, ensuring the final images truly reflect you.

Grooming and Hair:

If you’re up for it, schedule haircuts and grooming sessions a week or two before the shoot to ensure a fresh look.

For makeup it can go a variety of ways. If you want to look natural go with something natural and timeless that complements your features. Usually a dewy foundation/tinted moisturizer  is great for something on the skin but that doesn’t look overdone! It can be so fun to try new things for makeup but also try it out before the session. Sometimes excessive use of trendy or dramatic makeup, might overshadow your genuine expressions. A lot of the makeup prep comes down to outfits too! So be sure what youre doing is going to mesh well with that!

Rest and Sleep

Life can be crazy busy, but if possible, get a good amount of sleep before your session!

Props and Personal Touches:

Bring items that hold sentimental value or reflect your interests and hobbies.Depending on the type of shoot you’re having could impact these decisions. If were doing something for branding we can do a deep dive on ideas and what will stand out for you and your job/business! If the shoot is for something else personal touches can add depth to your portraits and tell a more comprehensive story. Whether it’s a favorite book, musical instrument, or a cherished accessory, incorporating these elements can make your portraits uniquely yours.Talk more with me about this if you wanna bring some things along.

Food and Snacks

It’s always a great idea to have something in your tummy before the session and have some quick snacks an drinks during the session! If were on the go outside pack something in a bag to grab quick! If were in the studio I have some snack and drinks there!

Relax and Enjoy the Experience:

Nervousness is completely natural before a photo shoot, but remember, this is a collaborative effort. Relax, be yourself, and enjoy the experience. Candid moments often make the most memorable photographs, so don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through.

Wardrobe Choices:

Your clothing choices play a significant role in the overall look of your portraits. Opt for outfits that make you feel confident and comfortable. Consider a mix of solid colors or subtle patterns, as they tend to photograph well. Avoid overly busy patterns, as they can distract from the main focus—you. Don’t forget to bring a variety of options, including layers and accessories, to add visual interest and versatility to your session.

Styling is unique to each person and shoot. But don’t be afraid to step outside the box! Ill include a few pinterest boards on outfit ideas. But please feel free to dig around and get some fun ideas you didn’t think about incorporating.

If you have lots of wrinkles in your outfit try to steam them out before coming in. You can also help reduce wrinkles by hanging the clothes in the car for yout drive to the shoot.

It could be a great idea to bring a few pairs of shoes. If were outside and walking alot something comfy to slip on could be great! If were indoors it can give ya a few options with your photos!

Frick Park, an iconic natural haven, serves as the perfect backdrop for capturing the essence of your senior year. One of my favorite spots within the park is the area under the 376 bridge—an undiscovered gem that adds a unique touch to your photoshoot.

Nestled near the 9-mile trail, this location offers a diverse range of looks and settings. The wooded area boasts scenic trails, providing a picturesque environment for a stroll. Additionally, there’s a trail near a stream, adding a tranquil touch to the surroundings. While we didn’t capture photos in this specific area during the featured session, the sheer beauty of the spot remains enticing.

Venturing further, you’ll discover the opportunity for captivating shots under the 376 bridge. Adjacent to the bridge lies an expansive open field adorned with various grasses. This area is ideal for clients seeking an outdoorsy field look while still enjoying the proximity to downtown for urban city shots.

As we explored other sections of the trail, we stumbled upon patches of yellow plants, adding a subtle touch of early fall to the collection. Frick Park truly offers a mix of outdoor styles, making it an excellent choice for senior photos. Whether you prefer the enchanting wooded trails, the openness of the field, or the urban vibe near the bridge, Frick Park provides a versatile canvas for creating unforgettable memories. Embrace the beauty of nature and the diversity of settings for senior photos that reflect your unique personality and style.
