Prepping For Your Maternity Session

Prepping For Your Maternity Session

Before we get into the fine details its best to know what type of session you want. Are you having an in studio session, an outdoor session, an in home lifestyle session etc… Some of the prep info will depend on the style you are having!

What to wear for your maternity session?

Here are some tips on what you can wear for your maternity session! I think the most important thing to take away from any of this advice is that its ok if none of this “speaks to you”! Ultimately you need to feel comfortable and have outfits that are a great representation of you! You can pull ideas from this if you feel stuck or confused on what might look best!

A lot of times you will see women wear tight clothing. Elastic type shirts and dresses are the most popular. Generally tighter fit dresses really show off the baby bump. Ultimately that’s what we’re trying to  really show off!

Pastels and light colors look really great all across the board of locations.

Contrasting one another. It can look really neat to have the each of you wearing similar colors but different shades that can set a bit of contrast between one another.

Don’t be afraid of patterns. Floras  and other patterns can look really great for maternity sessions.Generally if one person is wearing a pattern the other person will look great having some solid colors in the mix!

Maxi Dresses are generally the most popular but don’t feel limited to that!

Lace dresses are beautiful and timeless! A boho off the shoulder look can really pop the radiance of a mother to be!

Black turtlenecks are really in right now and can look super classic.

Luxury robes ( I have a few) really are a statement piece.

If your outfits wrinkle a lot try to steam them before you come to your session and hang them in your car when driving.

I also have a pintrest board here for you to look at to get a visual idea of what can work! Again you want to pick things that will represent you and the locations were going to! I hope this helps with what to wear for your maternity session!  https://www.pinterest.com/CtgPhotography/maternity-photo-outfit-ideas/ .

How to prep

-Getting your nails done could be a great idea since there will be a lot of shots of your hands close up to the belly.

-Go all natural or have yourself done up with hair and makeup. Im a huge advocate for you being you. Never feel like you NEED to do something because others have. If you wanna rock everything natural please do so. If you feel like getting pampered that day you so that too!

-When doing makeup just be mindful of certain shimmers. If we are doing any work with flashes sometimes the images can come of too shiny. You can apply highlighter but to be safe bring some extra foundation or whatever you use to over apply if we catch any issues. Contouring can look super amazing but some brands can give a very pale look under flashes.

-I know sleeping is hard when pregnant haha! But if you can try to rest up the best you can the night before and drink lots of water.

-Apply non greasy lotion to give the tummy a little glow (if it is showing in the photos) .

-If you are doing a stipped down stype of session do not wear tight clothes into the session. That will cause creases in the skin. Try to wear big sweat pants or a large dress that sits comfortably on the body.

-If bringing children along bring some toys, I-pad, anything you would like to use to keep them occupied a bit between shots. Even having another family member there to take them when you have couple shots can be great.  And bring extra snacks for them too!

-Dogs are allowed at shoots as well. If in studio you don’t always need someone with you to take them. But if we are outside its very smart to have another person there to take the pup away for some shots.

What to bring along?

-If you would like to bring along any keepsakes, onesies, sonogram photos please do. Anything you want to be incorporated works!

-Bring along snacks if you feel like you might need something to snack on!

-If were in the studio I have waters but feel free to bring along any other drinks you might want there.

-If using  any of my in house outfits bring along a black and/or body skin toned bra and underwear depending on the outfits you borrow. Its also smart to bring along pasties if you have any for any outfits in the client closet you choose that might need that.

Things I have you can wear

If you like any of these please let me know. You should mention it in an email so I can know to get it for your session. Some things are in my studio and some things are at home. So let me know as soon as you can in case Im not near the studio before your session to pick it up. I want to have enough time to keep it in the car!

What to avoid?

-Glitter/confetti. Unless it is eco friendly. I’d like to avoid blowing glitter or confetti into the air since it can get into crevices of the floor.
